Have you ever opened a function, read it three times, and still not been sure what it returns when the list is empty? Did you write it yourself eight months ago?

Understanding a function is not the same as reading it. You have to hold the branches, the mutations and the early returns in your head at once. The AI Function Explainer does that part for you and hands back a plain description of what the code actually does.

What is AI Function Explainer?

The AI Function Explainer reads a single function and describes it. Not a summary of the syntax, a description of the behaviour: what goes in, what comes out, what it changes along the way and what happens in the awkward cases.

The prompt box asks you to paste the code you want explained. That is the whole input. No description of intent is needed, because here the code is the source of truth and the explanation is the output.

The Audience setting is what makes the same function explainable to a beginner, a reviewer or someone with no technical background at all. Same code, three genuinely different explanations.

Why Use AI Function Explainer?

Most time spent in an unfamiliar codebase goes on comprehension, not typing. Anything that shortens the gap between opening a file and understanding it pays back immediately.

There is a second use that people discover later. Explaining your own function is a review technique. If the explanation that comes back is not the function you thought you wrote, one of you is wrong and it is worth finding out which.

SituationWhat you needSetting that gives it
New codebase, first weekWhat this function is forExplanation Depth High Level
Reviewing a changeWhat it does in every branchLine by Line on, Audience Reviewer
Explaining to a product managerThe behaviour without the mechanicsAudience Non Technical
Learning a new languageWhy the syntax does what it doesAudience Beginner, Add Examples on

Who Should Use It?

  • Developers joining a project where nobody has time to walk them through the code
  • Reviewers facing a function in a language or framework they do not use daily
  • Students reading real code rather than tutorial code for the first time
  • Anyone maintaining code they wrote a long time ago, which is the most common case of all
  • Technical writers who need to describe behaviour accurately without reading every branch

Note Paste the whole function including its signature and any decorators or annotations. Those carry meaning, sometimes more than the body does, and a function body without its signature loses the type information that makes an explanation precise.

How Does AI Function Explainer Work?

Prompt box. Open the AI Function Explainer and paste the code you want explained.

Model selector. Choose the engine before generating, from MSB AI, OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude AI, xAI Grok AI, DeepSeek, Qwen, Meta AI, NVIDIA AI, OpenRouter AI and MiniMax.

Advanced options accordion. Ten controls: Language, Explanation Depth, Audience and Output Format as dropdowns, four toggles, a Depth slider and a free text field.

Generate button. Code, model and settings run through the prompt engineering layer written for code explanation, which is the instruction set that keeps the answer descriptive rather than turning it into a rewrite.

Output card. The explanation appears under the button with a live word count, plus copy, listen, reuse, download and open in full view. Listen is genuinely useful here if you want the explanation while looking at the code.

Export row. DOC, TXT and HTML. DOC when the explanation is heading into documentation or an onboarding note.

Activity history. Session generations stay listed under the result, which lets you explain a function at two audience levels and compare them.

Best Use Cases

  • A function with several early returns where the exit conditions are hard to hold in your head
  • Dense one liners built from chained operations
  • Regular expressions and the functions wrapped around them
  • Code using language features you have not met, such as generators or decorators
  • Your own code from a previous project, before you change it
  • Preparing to explain a function to someone else in a review

Behaviour, not syntax

The explanation says what the function does with its input, rather than naming the language features it uses.

One function, several readers

Audience changes the whole register, from a beginner walkthrough to a reviewer's summary.

Edge cases named

Note Edge Cases surfaces empty input, nulls and boundaries, which is usually why you opened the function.

Output you can paste

Doc Comment format returns a block ready to sit above the signature rather than prose you have to reshape.

The order that works, when the function is genuinely confusing:

  1. Run it once at High Level to find out what the function is for.
  2. Read the summary and decide whether you even need the detail.
  3. Switch to Detailed with Note Edge Cases on and read again.
  4. Turn Line by Line on only for the handful of lines still unclear.
  5. Write your remaining question into Custom Instructions and generate one last time.

Advanced Options Guide

Add SummaryPuts a one paragraph overview at the topKeep on. It is the part you will rereadOn
Note Edge CasesCalls out empty input, nulls, boundaries and error pathsLeave on. These are usually the reason you opened the functionOn
DepthSlider from 1 to 100 setting how thorough the explanation isRaise it when the function has nested conditions or recursion60
Custom InstructionsFree text up to 1000 characters over the settingsUse it to ask the specific question you actually have"Focus on what happens when the list is empty"

Caution The explanation describes the code you pasted, not the code it calls. If the function delegates the interesting part to a helper, the explanation will say so rather than guess, and that is your signal to paste the helper too.

Example Inputs

A good input is one complete function. Here is the kind of thing that produces a useful explanation.

def allocate(seats, requests, allow_split=False):
    remaining = dict(seats)
    result, unfilled = {}, []
    for req in sorted(requests, key=lambda r: (-r.priority, r.id)):
        block = next((s for s, n in remaining.items() if n >= req.size), None)
if block is None and allow_split:
            ...
        if block is None:
            unfilled.append(req.id)
            continue
        ...
    return result, unfilled

Settings: Explanation Depth Detailed, Audience Intermediate, Output Format Plain Explanation, Add Examples on, Note Edge Cases on, Depth 65, Custom Instructions "explain the sort order and what allow_split changes".

The Custom Instructions line is doing the real work. The sort key and the split flag are the two things anyone reading this function actually wants explained, and asking directly beats reading a general description of the loop.

What it is good at

  • Dense functions with several branches or early returns
  • Explaining the same code at different levels for different readers
  • Naming the edge case behaviour you were actually looking for
  • Producing a doc comment you can paste above the function

What to keep in mind

  • It sees only the function you pasted, not what it calls
  • It describes what the code does, not whether that is correct
  • Very long functions give shallower explanations, so split them first
  • ✅ Whole function pasted, signature included
  • ✅ Audience matched to whoever will read the explanation
  • ✅ Note Edge Cases on
  • ✅ Your actual question written into Custom Instructions
  • ✅ Helpers pasted too if the explanation says the work happens elsewhere

Pro tip If the explanation of your own function surprises you, that is a finding rather than a curiosity. It usually means the function does two things, and the AI Code Refactor Tool is the next stop. When the surprise is about cost rather than behaviour, the AI Code Complexity Explainer is the better read.

AIToolsay is a free AI tools platform made of dedicated workspaces rather than one general chat box with many names. Each tool has its own prompt engineering and its own options panel, which is why an explanation tool asks about audience and depth instead of tone and word count. Every tool is free, with no account required before you start. You also choose which engine answers, from MSB AI, OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude AI, xAI Grok AI, DeepSeek, Qwen, Meta AI, NVIDIA AI, OpenRouter AI and MiniMax, and explanations of the same function differ enough between engines that a second read is sometimes clearer. Beyond the tool suite there is an AI directory, an AI models directory, courses, prompts, guides and news, all reachable from the AIToolsay homepage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the AI Function Explainer free?

Yes. It is free to use, nothing is installed, and no account is needed to explain a function.

How long a function can it handle?

One function at a time works best. Beyond roughly a hundred lines the explanation gets shallower, which is usually a sign the function should be split rather than explained.

Can it explain code to someone non technical?

Yes. Set Audience to Non Technical and Explanation Depth to Conceptual. The result describes what the code achieves without the mechanics, which is what most stakeholders actually want.

Will it tell me if the function has a bug?

Not directly. It describes what the code does. That said, reading an accurate description of your own function is one of the better ways to notice that it does not do what you intended.

Can I get comments I can paste into the code?

Set Output Format to Inline Comments or Doc Comment. Inline gives you notes through the body, Doc Comment gives you a block for above the signature.

What if the function calls other functions?

It will describe the call rather than invent what the helper does. If the interesting behaviour lives in the helper, paste that as well and explain them together.

Does Line by Line always help?

For dense code, yes. For a long function it produces a wall of text that is harder to read than the code. Use it on the ten confusing lines rather than the whole file.

Code is read far more often than it is written, and most of that reading is done by someone who has forgotten the context. Paste the function, ask the question you actually have, and let the AI Function Explainer give you back the version of it you can hold in your head.
