What happens to a customer in the first thirty days after they buy from you? Can anyone in your team describe it the same way? And do you know which of those moments is the one that decides whether they stay?

Customer journeys are real whether you design them or not. The difference is that an undesigned one is full of gaps nobody owns. The AI Customer Journey Planner turns your goals and constraints into a mapped journey with stages, actions and checkpoints, so the experience is something you decided rather than something that happened.

What is AI Customer Journey Planner?

The AI Customer Journey Planner is a planning workspace on AIToolsay for mapping what a customer experiences and when. You describe who they are, what you want them to reach, and what limits you. It returns a journey laid out over time.

Because it is a planner rather than a diagram tool, the output is a plan you can act on. Each stage carries the actions that make it happen, who or what triggers them, and the signals that tell you a customer has moved forward or stalled.

Why Use AI Customer Journey Planner?

Most journey work stalls at the whiteboard stage. Everyone agrees the map is useful, nobody turns it into scheduled actions, and three months later the map is out of date and unused.

The usual failureWhat a planned journey fixes
A map with no actions attachedInclude Action Steps puts work under each stage
No definition of moving forwardMilestones mark what progress looks like
Nothing measured, so nothing improvesKPIs attached to each stage
A plan too detailed to maintainPlanning Style set to Simple or Minimal keeps it usable

What it does well

  • Turns a journey map into scheduled actions
  • Works at any horizon from a week to a year
  • Names the moments where customers usually drop out
  • Produces the same journey as a timeline, a table or a checklist

What stays your job

  • Knowing what your customers actually experience today
  • Deciding which stage deserves the effort first
  • The systems work that makes an automated step real

How Does AI Customer Journey Planner Work?

The AI Customer Journey Planner keeps every part of the workflow on one page.

Prompt input area

A large text box with the placeholder Enter your goals, constraints, or context for the customer journey planner. Describe the customer, the outcome you want, and the limits you work under.

AI model selector

Choose the engine before generating. MSB AI, Anthropic Claude AI, Google Gemini and OpenAI ChatGPT are all on the list, along with several others.

Advanced options accordion

Ten controls, collapsed until you open them: four dropdowns, four toggles, a detail slider and a free text field.

Generate button

Sends the brief, the model and every setting through the prompt engineering layer in one request.

Output section

The journey lands in a result card, with a live word count in the footer so a Minimal plan does not quietly become a document.

Export tools

DOC, TXT and HTML downloads, plus Copy, Listen, Reuse, Download and open in full view on every result.

Activity history panel

Session generations stay listed underneath, so an onboarding journey and a renewal journey can sit side by side.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Name the customer type. One journey per segment works better than one journey for everyone.
  2. State the outcome. Activated in fourteen days, renewed at twelve months, whatever it is.
  3. Describe what happens today, including the parts that are manual or missed.
  4. Set Planning Horizon to the period the journey covers.
  5. Choose Planning Style. Milestone Based suits onboarding, Time Blocked suits campaigns.
  6. Turn on Include Milestones, Include Action Steps and Include Metrics / KPIs.
  7. Generate, read it as if you were the customer, then use Reuse to fix anything that feels like work for them.

Tip Write the journey from the customer's side, not yours. "They receive a setup call" is a stage. "We send an onboarding email" is an internal task pretending to be one.

Key Features

Stages with actions

Every stage carries the work that makes it happen, so the plan is executable rather than descriptive.

Six planning horizons

A two week onboarding journey and a twelve month lifecycle use the same controls.

Stage level measures

One toggle attaches the numbers that tell you whether customers are actually moving through.

Seven output shapes

Plan, checklist, timeline, table, roadmap, step by step or calendar, exported as DOC, TXT or HTML.

Advanced Options Guide

Include DeadlinesAttaches timing to each stepEssential for onboarding, less so for lifecycleOn
Include Metrics / KPIsAdds the measure for each stageAlways, or you cannot tell if the journey worksOn
Detail LevelSlider from 1 to 100The plan is either vague or unmaintainable60
Custom InstructionsFree text, up to 1000 charactersTo state your tools, team size and what cannot be automatedYour channels and the size of the team delivering this

Caution A journey with fourteen touchpoints looks thorough on paper and reads as harassment in an inbox. Set Detail Level lower and ask yourself whether the customer would want each step.

Example Inputs

Customer type: small accountancy practices, 3 to 15 staff, buying our
practice management software on a monthly plan.
Goal: fully set up and using the client portal within 30 days.
Today: they get a welcome email, a link to help docs, and nothing else
unless they ask. Around a third never import their client list.
Constraints: two person support team, no dedicated onboarding person,
we use email and in app messages only, no phone calls.

Settings: Planning Horizon = 1 Month, Planning Style = Milestone Based,
Output Format = Timeline, Priority Focus = Impact, Detail Level = 60,
Milestones, Action Steps, Deadlines and Metrics all on.

Example Outputs

That brief returns a timeline built around the import problem, because it was named as the drop off point. The opening looks roughly like this, truncated.

STAGE 1: DAYS 0 TO 2 | Milestone: account set up and first login
Actions
- Welcome email with one link only: import your client list
- In app prompt on first login pointing at the same action
Measure: percentage completing first login within 48 hours

STAGE 2: DAYS 3 TO 7 | Milestone: client list imported
Actions
- Day 3 in app nudge for accounts with no import
- Day 5 short email with the two most common import problems
Measure: import completion rate by day 7 ...

Notice that the plan spends its early effort on one action rather than introducing every feature. That is what naming the drop off point in the brief buys you.

Tips & Common Mistakes

  • ✅ Plan one journey per customer segment
  • ✅ Name where customers currently drop off
  • ✅ State which channels you actually have
  • ✅ Give each stage a single primary action
  • ✅ Attach a measure to every stage
  • ✅ Export the plan so it can be reviewed rather than rebuilt

Common mistakes

  • Planning for the customer you wish you had. Describe the ones you actually get, including the disengaged ones.
  • Listing internal tasks as journey stages. If the customer would not notice it, it is not a stage.
  • Adding a touchpoint at every gap. Silence is sometimes the right design.
  • Ignoring the constraints. A journey that needs a person you do not have will never run.
  • Never measuring the stages. Without stage measures you cannot tell a broken journey from a broken product.

Comparison Table

ApproachWhat you end up withDoes it survive the quarter?
Whiteboard sessionA map, photographed and forgottenRarely
Journey mapping softwareA detailed diagramYes, if someone owns it
Automation tool workflowsWorking steps, no overall viewYes, but hard to explain
AI Customer Journey PlannerA written plan with actions and measuresYes, and it takes a minute to redo

Pro tip Generate the journey twice, once at 1 Month for onboarding and once at 1 Year for the full lifecycle. The overlap between them is where your most important touchpoints sit.

AIToolsay is a free AI platform built as a large suite of purpose built tools, each with its own controls rather than one shared panel. Nothing on the tool pages needs an account, nothing is metered, and there is no paid tier. Each generation runs on the engine you choose, whether that is MSB AI, DeepSeek, xAI Grok AI or another from the list. Journey planning depends on knowing who you are planning for, so the AI Customer Persona Generator is a sensible first step, and the AI Meeting Agenda Generator sets the agenda for the first real meeting in the journey you design. The rest of the suite sits on the AIToolsay homepage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the AI Customer Journey Planner free?

Yes. No account, no credits, no limit on generations. Describe the journey and generate.

Should I plan one journey or several?

Several, one per segment. A journey that tries to fit every customer usually fits none of them well.

Can it plan a journey for an existing customer base?

Yes. Set the horizon to 6 Months or 1 Year and describe where those customers are today. The plan then focuses on retention and expansion rather than onboarding.

What if we only have email as a channel?

Say so in the brief or in Custom Instructions. The plan will use what you have rather than assuming a full stack of tools.

Which output format is easiest to work from?

Timeline for design, Checklist for delivery. Generate both from the same brief if different people need different views.

How do I know whether the journey is working?

Keep Include Metrics / KPIs on. Each stage comes back with a measure, and stage measures are how you find the step that is losing people.

How often should the journey be reviewed?

Quarterly, or whenever your product or team changes shape. Regenerating from an updated brief takes a minute.

The journey your customers actually take is being designed either way. Doing it deliberately means fewer people stuck at the same step and a clearer answer when someone asks why customers leave. Start with the segment you understand best and plan just their first month.
