How long does it take you to write a mock paper? Have you ever reused last year's exam because there was no time to write a new one? Do your practice papers have mark allocations, or do you decide those while marking?

Writing a whole paper is a different job from writing questions. It needs a spread of difficulty, a sensible mark distribution and a length that fits the clock. The AI Exam Generator produces that structure, which is the part that takes an evening.

What is AI Exam Generator?

It writes practice papers. You name the subject, the level and the paper length, and it returns questions ordered by difficulty with marks attached.

Two things it is not. It is not calibrated to any real awarding body, so a paper it calls foundation level may sit above or below where your board actually pitches. And it is not a source of correct answers, whatever the mark scheme says.

Important Never issue a generated paper without working it yourself first. The questions can be ambiguous, the marks can be misallocated, and the answers can be wrong. A practice paper with errors teaches pupils that they got things wrong when they did not, which does more damage than no practice at all.

Why Use AI Exam Generator?

Because past papers run out, and the ones that remain your pupils have already seen.

The situationWithout itWith it
Pupils have done every past paperThey memorise answers rather than methodFresh questions on the same content
A mock needed next weekLast year's paper, againA new paper drafted in an evening
One weak topic across the classA whole paper for one weaknessA short focused paper on that topic alone
Two groups sitting at different timesThe first group tells the secondTwo versions of equivalent difficulty

Who Should Use It?

  • Teachers writing mocks and end of unit tests
  • Tutors needing practice papers pitched at one pupil
  • Departments producing two equivalent versions of a test
  • Home educators assessing progress without a school behind them
  • Students revising who have exhausted the published papers

How Does AI Exam Generator Work?

One working surface runs every tool on the site. Here it is producing a paper.

  1. Prompt input area. A large box for the subject, the level, the duration and the topics the paper must cover.
  2. AI model selector. Choose the engine first, from MSB AI, OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude AI, xAI Grok AI, DeepSeek, Qwen, Meta AI, NVIDIA AI, OpenRouter AI and MiniMax.
  3. Advanced options accordion. Collapsed until opened, holding the ten controls below.
  4. Generate button. Your brief, engine and settings run through the prompt engineering layer, the instruction wrapper telling the model to produce assessment material.
  5. Output section. The paper lands in the result card with a running word count in the footer.
  6. Export tools. DOC, TXT and HTML downloads beneath the card, with DOC being the useful one for anything printed.
  7. Activity history panel. Earlier papers queue underneath with copy, listen, reuse, download and open result, which is how a second equivalent version gets built.

Pro tip State the total marks and the duration explicitly. Left to itself the tool will produce a paper that is roughly right, and roughly right is what turns a fifty minute test into an eighty minute one when a class actually sits it.

Key Features

Difficulty that builds

Use Clear Structure orders questions from accessible to demanding rather than scattering them.

Equivalent second versions

Rerunning the same brief produces a different paper on identical content, which solves the two sittings problem.

Focused papers

Naming one weak topic produces a short paper on that alone, which published papers can never do.

Pitched to candidates

Focus set to Exam Candidates changes the register from teaching material to assessment material.

Exports for printing

DOC downloads open in a word processor for formatting, spacing and the front sheet.

Advanced Options Guide

Ten real settings, nothing chosen for you.

OptionWhat it controlsWhen to change itWhere to start
Output TypeThe form: Standard, Detailed, Concise, Structured, Template, Step by Step, Professional or CreativeTemplate if your department uses a fixed paper formatStructured. A paper needs sections and numbering above all
Tone / StyleThe register: Professional, Formal, Friendly, Simple, Academic, Persuasive, Confident or NeutralFormal for anything resembling a real examFormal. Exam wording is deliberately dry, and that is correct
LengthThe size: Short, Normal, Long or DetailedMatch the duration, and state the duration tooNormal, with the exact minutes written into the brief
Focus / AudienceThe reader: Students, Teachers, Parents, Self-Learners, Beginners, Exam Candidates, Tutors or GeneralExam Candidates unless you want a teaching resourceExam Candidates. It shifts the register to assessment
Include ExamplesAdds worked illustrationsOff. A paper with worked examples is a worksheetOff. This is the one tool where examples are wrong
Use Clear StructureSections, numbering and mark allocationNever off for a paperOn, always
Include Key PointsAdds a summary of the content coveredUseful for your own records, wrong on the pupil copyOff for the paper itself
Age-Appropriate LanguageAdjusts reading level of the questionsOn, since reading level should not be the barrierOn. A candidate who misreads the question shows nothing
Detail LevelSlider from 1 to 100, sparse through to thoroughLower it when questions start over explainingAround 40. Exam questions should be terse
Custom InstructionsFree text up to 1000 charactersEvery run. Marks, duration and topics go hereTotal marks, exact duration, topics to cover, and: include a mark scheme separately

Example Outputs

Rachel teaches A level biology and needs a topic test on enzymes for two class groups sitting a day apart, so she opens the AI Exam Generator with the marks and minutes fixed in advance.

Brief: A level biology, enzymes topic test. 45 minutes,
40 marks. Must cover induced fit, competitive and non
competitive inhibition, and factors affecting rate.
Two equivalent versions needed. Mix of short answer
and one six mark extended response.

Output Type = Structured
Tone / Style = Formal
Length = Normal
Focus / Audience = Exam Candidates
Include Examples = Off
Use Clear Structure = On
Include Key Points = Off
Age-Appropriate Language = On
Detail Level = 40
Custom Instructions = Exactly 40 marks, 45 minutes.
One 6 mark extended response on inhibition. Provide a
separate mark scheme. Do not include worked examples.
Question 1 [2 marks]
Describe what is meant by the induced fit model of
enzyme action.

Question 2 [4 marks]
Explain why a competitive inhibitor has less effect at
high substrate concentration…

Question 5 [6 marks]
Compare the effects of competitive and non competitive
inhibition on the rate of an enzyme controlled
reaction.

Note Sit the paper yourself under the time limit before a class does. It is the only reliable way to find out that question four is ambiguous or that forty marks is really fifty five minutes of work, and it takes less time than remarking a test that went wrong.

The marks add to forty because she said so, and turning examples off kept it a paper rather than a revision sheet. She works both versions herself before either is sat. Where pupils need practice rather than assessment, the AI Worksheet Generator is the right tool, and multiple choice sections are better built with the AI MCQ Generator.

Tips & Common Mistakes

  • ✅ State the total marks and the exact duration
  • ✅ Turn Include Examples off, since a paper is not a worksheet
  • ✅ Work the whole paper yourself before anyone sits it
  • ✅ Ask for the mark scheme as a separate block
  • ✅ Compare it against a real past paper for pitch
Common mistakeWhat it costsThe fix
Trusting the difficulty levelA paper pitched well off your board's standardCompare against a real past paper before using it
Not stating marks or durationA test that overruns the lesson badlyWrite both numbers into Custom Instructions
Issuing an unchecked mark schemePupils marked wrong for correct answersWork every question and mark scheme line yourself
Leaving examples onA paper that shows candidates the methodTurn Include Examples off for assessment

What works well

  • Produces fresh questions when past papers are exhausted
  • Two equivalent versions cost one extra run
  • Focused single topic papers are simple to produce
  • Free to use, with no account needed

What to watch for

  • It is not calibrated to any awarding body's standard
  • Mark schemes contain errors and must be worked through
  • Questions can be ambiguous in ways only marking reveals
  • Mark totals drift unless you state them explicitly

AIToolsay is a free platform holding a large library of AI tools, and this exam generator is one of them. Every tool addresses a single task, carries its own controls, and has prompt engineering written specifically behind it. There is nothing to register for and nothing to install. Which engine writes is a menu choice covering MSB AI, OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude AI and others, and asking two of them the same question is a rough way to catch a question that does not work. Assessment usually sits alongside planning and resources, which is why a few of these end up open together. Browse them from the AIToolsay homepage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the difficulty matched to a real exam board?

No. It has no calibration against any awarding body. Compare a generated paper against a real past paper before deciding it is the right standard.

Is the AI Exam Generator free?

It costs nothing, and there is no sign up step.

Can I trust the mark scheme?

Not without checking. Work every question yourself. A wrong mark scheme penalises pupils for correct work, which is worse than no practice paper.

How do I get two equivalent versions?

Run the same brief twice. The content matches while the questions differ, which is what you need for groups sitting at different times.

Why does my paper have worked examples in it?

Include Examples was left on. It belongs on teaching material and defeats the purpose on an assessment.

Can it write a full mock in one go?

It can draft one. Whether it is a usable mock depends entirely on the review you do afterwards, and that review is not quick.

A practice paper is only worth sitting if the questions are sound and the mark scheme is right. The drafting is genuinely hours of work and can be handed over. The checking cannot, and it is the part that decides whether the paper helps anybody.

So open the AI Exam Generator, state your marks and your minutes, and draft the paper you have been putting off. Thanks for reading to the end, and I hope the marking is the only evening it costs you.
