What do you do when a reviewer asks for a change you believe is wrong? Make it anyway and weaken the paper, or argue and risk the editor deciding you are difficult? Disagreeing well is a specific skill, and most first drafts of a rebuttal are written in the wrong voice entirely. AI Rebuttal to Reviewer Comments drafts the argued refusal, evidenced and calm.

What is AI Rebuttal to Reviewer Comments?

AI Rebuttal to Reviewer Comments drafts the passages in a revision letter where you push back. You paste in the comment and your reasoning. It returns a response that acknowledges the point, sets out your position, supports it with evidence, and offers whatever middle ground exists.

It is the companion to a full point by point response letter, not a replacement for one. Most comments are accepted and actioned, and those need a short mapping of comment to change. This tool handles the small number that need an argument, which is where letters usually go wrong.

Why Use AI Rebuttal to Reviewer Comments?

The difficulty is that you are annoyed, and the letter should not be.

  • Removes the defensiveness that a draft written straight after reading the reviews always carries.
  • Structures each disagreement as position, evidence, and offer, which is what an editor can act on.
  • Keeps the reviewer's point acknowledged accurately, so you are not arguing against a version of it.
  • Separates what you genuinely cannot do from what you would rather not do.
  • Produces something an editor can adjudicate rather than a paragraph of protest.

Never attack the reviewer Every response is read by the editor, and often by the reviewer, and sometimes it becomes part of an open review record. Nothing about the reviewer's competence, attention, or motives belongs in a rebuttal. Argue with the point, never with the person, and remove any sentence that would embarrass you if it were published alongside the paper.

How Does AI Rebuttal to Reviewer Comments Work?

Paste the reviewer's comment into the prompt box exactly as written, then your reasoning for disagreeing, then any evidence you can cite from your own work. Say what you are willing to offer instead, because a rebuttal with no concession rarely succeeds.

Choose an engine from the model selector below. AI Rebuttal to Reviewer Comments runs on MSB AI, Anthropic Claude AI, OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Gemini, DeepSeek or Qwen equally. Tone under disagreement varies between engines, so generating twice and keeping the calmer one is a reasonable habit.

Set your controls in the advanced options accordion, then generate the response. The output card shows the response with a live word count, and short is right, since a long rebuttal reads as anxiety. Each response has Copy, Listen, Reuse and Download, with DOC, TXT and HTML export available. Listen matters here more than usual: a sentence that reads as firm on screen can sound sharp aloud, and that is the sentence to cut. Reuse handles the next contested comment without you restating the context. The activity history panel retains each draft from the session.

What you put in the promptWhat changes in the response
The comment quoted exactlyYou respond to what was said, not to what stung
Your evidence from the paperThe position is supported rather than asserted
What you are willing to offerThe response ends in a proposal, not a refusal
"Respectful, no defensiveness"The draft loses the tone you would regret

Key Features

Position and evidence

Each disagreement arrives as a claim with support, which is what an editor can weigh.

An offer attached

The response proposes something, so declining a change does not read as refusing to revise.

Tone checked by ear

Listen plays the response back, and defensiveness is far more obvious aloud than on the page.

Accurate acknowledgement

The reviewer's point is restated as written, which stops you arguing against a version of it.

Point by point reuse

Reuse handles the next contested comment without re establishing the context each time.

What A Finished Rebuttal Reads Like

A good response opens by restating the reviewer's point accurately and thanking them for raising it, in one sentence and without flattery. It then states your position plainly: you have not made this change, and here is why.

The evidence follows, drawn from your own data, your design, or the literature you can cite. Then the offer: an added sentence acknowledging the concern, a supplementary analysis, a clarified limitation, or a change to the framing that addresses the underlying worry without adopting the specific request. It closes there, with no restatement and no appeal to fairness.

Concede everything you fairly can A letter that contests one point out of fifteen is persuasive. A letter that contests eight looks like an author who does not want to revise. Accept every reasonable request, make the changes properly, and spend your credibility on the one or two that genuinely matter.

When To Push Back And When Not To

Push back when the requested change would make the paper wrong, when it asks for work the design cannot support, when it contradicts another reviewer, or when it exceeds what the study set out to do. Those are all defensible, and editors expect authors to say so.

Do not push back to avoid effort, to protect a phrasing you like, or because the comment felt dismissive. Extra analyses, added citations, and restructured sections are usually worth doing even when you disagree, and doing them buys you the standing to decline the one thing that matters.

SituationResponse
The change would misstate your findingRebut, with evidence
The reviewer misread somethingClarify politely, and fix the text that allowed the misreading
Two reviewers ask for opposite thingsSay so, choose one, and let the editor arbitrate
The request is more work than you wantedDo it

The Lines You Do Not Cross

  • No comment on the reviewer as a person, their expertise, or their motives.
  • No claim about a change you have not made.
  • No citation you have not read, and none supplied by a tool.
  • No sarcasm, however mild it feels at the time.
  • No appeal to how long the process has taken or how much work you have done.
  • No attempt to identify the reviewer, and no reference to who you think they are.

Never claim a change you did not make Editors check, reviewers check, and a response letter that says a section was revised when it was not ends papers and damages reputations. If you decline a change, say so explicitly. An honest disagreement is respected; a false claim of compliance is not recoverable.

When The Draft Comes Back Wrong

  1. It sounds defensive. Lower Creativity, set Tone to Professional, and check it with Listen.
  2. It concedes everything. State your position explicitly in the prompt; the tool will not hold a line you did not give it.
  3. It argues without evidence. Supply the specific data, section, or citation that supports you.
  4. It is far too long. Set Length to Short. One paragraph per contested point is the target.
  5. It criticises the reviewer. Remove those sentences entirely and add an instruction never to comment on the reviewer.
  6. It offers nothing. Tell it what compromise you are willing to make, because a rebuttal without one rarely lands.

Wait a day before sending Write the rebuttal when the reviews arrive, then leave it overnight and read it again. The sentence you most want to keep on the first day is almost always the one to cut on the second.

Pros And Cons

What works well

  • Removes the defensiveness that ruins first drafts of a rebuttal.
  • Structures disagreement into something an editor can adjudicate.
  • Prompts a concession, which is what makes a rebuttal persuasive.
  • Free with no account, through every round of review.

What to watch

  • It cannot judge whether your disagreement is actually correct.
  • Any citation it produces should be assumed invented and removed.
  • Politeness settings can tip into concession if you do not state your position.
  • The decision to contest a point remains yours and your co-authors'.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it acceptable to decline a reviewer's request?

Yes, when you have a reason and you state it. Editors expect authors to push back occasionally, and a well argued refusal is more respected than a grudging compliance.

Is there any cost to run the AI Rebuttal to Reviewer Comments?

Yes. AI Rebuttal to Reviewer Comments requires no account and costs nothing, and you choose which AI model drafts the response.

How many points should I contest?

As few as possible. One or two well argued disagreements in a letter that accepts everything else is far more persuasive than a letter that fights on many fronts.

What if two reviewers contradict each other?

Say so plainly, explain which position you have followed and why, and leave the decision with the editor. That is exactly the situation editors are there to resolve.

Should I address the editor or the reviewer?

Write to the editor, about the reviewer's point. The editor makes the decision, and the framing keeps the tone appropriate.

What if the reviewer misunderstood my paper?

Assume the text allowed the misunderstanding, fix that text, and say you have clarified it. Blaming the reader is both unwise and usually inaccurate.

Do I need to disclose AI assistance in the letter?

Follow the journal's policy, which normally covers the whole submission. The arguments and the evidence must be yours regardless.

Peer review is a negotiation conducted in writing with someone who cannot reply immediately. Concede generously, argue narrowly, evidence what you argue, and never let the letter carry your irritation. Thank you for reading, and good luck with the reply.
